Paddling With Dogs in Austin: A Dog-Owner's Guide to Canoes, Kayaks & SUPs

Zilker Park Boat Rentals7 min read

If you live in Austin with a dog, you've probably noticed that dogs are welcome at roughly 90% of activities in this city. Zilker Park is one of the great dog-friendly spots in Austin — and yes, that absolutely extends to the water. Dogs are welcome in our canoes, kayaks, and on our SUPs. They've been paddling with us since the beginning.

Yes, Dogs Are Welcome

We love dogs. Our customers love dogs. Barton Creek and Lady Bird Lake are public waterways where dogs are permitted. There's no extra charge for your dog — they're part of your crew. We've had dogs of every size, breed, and temperament on our boats. Some take to it immediately; others need five minutes of reassurance before they settle in and start enjoying themselves.

A few things to know upfront: we don't provide life jackets for dogs (only for human paddlers), alcohol is not permitted on the water, and you're responsible for your dog's behavior on the creek.

Which Boat Is Best for Your Dog?

This depends a lot on your dog's size, temperament, and whether they've been in a boat before.

  • Canoe — Best for most dogs. The open hull gives dogs room to move around, change positions, and sprawl out if they want. Wide, stable, and forgiving. If your dog is nervous, a canoe lets you reassure them more easily. Fits large breeds comfortably.
  • Tandem Kayak — Good option if you have a medium-to-small dog and two paddlers. The dog can sit in the middle or in front. More stable than a single kayak.
  • SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) — Surprisingly great for medium and small dogs who are confident and like to be active. Dogs love standing at the bow and 'spotting' things. Instagram gold. Not recommended for large, nervous, or easily startled dogs.
  • Single Kayak — Workable for small dogs only. Not the best choice — you're squeezed together and the dog's movement can affect your balance.

Getting Fido Comfortable on the Water

First-time boat dogs almost always have the same arc: nervous at the dock → mildly freaked out for the first three minutes → completely fine → actively enjoying themselves. The key is getting through that first three minutes.

  • Let them sniff the boat on shore before getting in. This helps dogs process the new object.
  • Get in first, then help them in gently. Don't rush or force it.
  • Talk calmly and reassuringly — they're reading your energy.
  • If they're very anxious, stay near the bank for the first few minutes so they can see solid ground.
  • Bring treats. Motion-activated treat delivery is a universal dog training tool.

Safety for Dog Paddlers

Barton Creek is shallow in many sections and your dog can absolutely swim to shore if they end up in the water. But safety is still important:

  • We don't provide dog life jackets — bring your own if your dog isn't a confident swimmer. A canine PFD runs $25-$50 at any Austin pet store.
  • Make sure your dog has a leash accessible if needed once you're on shore.
  • Keep your dog from lunging at birds or wildlife — it can tip a kayak or SUP.
  • If your dog goes in the water voluntarily, let them — just help them back in carefully.
  • Know your dog: is this a bold adventure dog or a nervous homebody? Honest self-assessment leads to better paddling days.

What to Pack for a Dog-Friendly Paddle

  • Fresh water and a collapsible bowl — dogs get dehydrated faster on the water
  • Dog life jacket (if applicable)
  • Towel for post-paddle drying
  • Treats for positive reinforcement and general morale
  • Leash (for on-shore portions)
  • Poop bags — pack it in, pack it out
  • A dry bag for your phone so you can capture the moment without anxiety

The Best Paddle Route for Dogs

We recommend the Barton Creek section for first-time dog paddlers — it's calmer and more sheltered than Lady Bird Lake, with plenty of banks for your dog to scramble onto if they want a break. The cypress shade keeps temperatures reasonable even on hot days. Once your dog is comfortable, the quarter-mile to Lady Bird Lake opens up more options.
