Things to Do at Zilker Park: A Local's Guide for 2026

Zilker Park Boat RentalsUpdated 9 min read

Ask any Austinite where to spend a perfect Saturday and they'll point south of the river: Zilker Park. This 351-acre stretch of green along Barton Creek and Lady Bird Lake is Austin's true backyard — free, beautiful, and stuffed with things to do. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a local who's somehow never made it out here, this guide covers everything worth doing in the park.

Barton Springs Pool — Austin's Outdoor Swimming Hole

Let's start with the most iconic spot in the park: Barton Springs Pool. Fed by underground springs that maintain a year-round temperature of 68°F, this three-acre natural swimming pool is the unofficial soul of Austin. On a July afternoon when the thermometer hits 103°F, the spring-fed water feels like the most perfect thing on earth.

The pool is open year-round (with occasional closures for maintenance or water quality), charges a small admission fee, and is beloved by everyone from serious lap swimmers to dogs and families splashing around in the shallow end. Get there early on summer weekends — the line can stretch down the hill.

Rent a Canoe, Kayak, or SUP on Barton Creek

Just downstream from Barton Springs Pool, tucked into the limestone banks of Barton Creek, sits one of Austin's longest-running businesses: Zilker Park Boat Rentals. In operation since 1969, this family-owned concession rents canoes, single and tandem kayaks, and fiberglass stand-up paddleboards — all for just $21 per hour per boat.

From the launch, you can paddle up Barton Creek through cathedral-like cypress groves and limestone canyon walls, or head downstream the quarter mile to Lady Bird Lake for the stunning downtown Austin skyline view. It's one of the great bargain outdoor experiences in Texas. Cash only — there's an ATM at the nearby Zilker Eagle depot.

Ride the Zilker Eagle Mini Train

Kids absolutely love the Zilker Eagle, a narrow-gauge miniature train that's been running loops through the park since 1962. The route offers beautiful views of the park, Barton Creek, and Lady Bird Lake from a completely different angle. It's cheap, beloved, and a great way to rest your legs between activities. Look for the train station near the south end of the park — that's also where the ATM is if you need cash for your boat rental.

Explore the Botanical Garden and Umlauf Sculpture Garden

The Austin Area Garden Center within Zilker Park is a peaceful 0.5-mile stroll through themed gardens: the Japanese Garden, the Rose Garden, the Herb Garden, and more. It's free and less crowded than other park attractions — perfect for a quiet morning or a date. Just across the creek, the Umlauf Sculpture Garden showcases the work of sculptor Charles Umlauf in a gorgeous outdoor setting integrated into the landscape.

Walk the Ann and Roy Butler Hike-and-Bike Trail

The 10-mile paved trail circling Lady Bird Lake connects to Zilker Park and is one of the great urban running, cycling, and walking paths anywhere in the country. You can join it at the south side of the park near Barton Springs and jog east for views of downtown Austin across the water, or west into the more wooded sections near Barton Creek. Early mornings and evenings are magical — especially when the light hits the skyline.

Great Blue Herons, Turtles, and the Wildlife of Barton Creek

Zilker Park is a wildlife hotspot even in the middle of Austin. Great blue herons stalk the shallows of Barton Creek, turtles sun on limestone ledges, and white-tailed deer are spotted at dawn in the wooded sections. On the water, you'll see cormorants diving and egrets fishing. Bring binoculars if birdwatching is your thing — the creek and lake edge are exceptional.

Best Time to Visit and Parking Tips

Summer weekends are beautiful but crowded — expect full parking lots by 10am on a Saturday in June. Weekday mornings are magical: cool air, empty trails, and first pick of the boats. Spring (March–May) and fall (October–November) are the sweet spots for weather. Winter mornings can be cool but Barton Springs remains swimmable year-round.

Parking is free throughout Zilker Park. The main lots off Barton Springs Road fill first. For the boat rental, you want the easternmost lot — walk down the stairs to the left near Barton Springs Pool. Can't find it? Call (512) 478-3852.

A Sample Zilker Day Itinerary

  1. 8:30am — Park in the easternmost lot. Walk down to the boat dock and catch the first launch of the day.
  2. 9am–11am — Paddle Barton Creek and out to Lady Bird Lake for the skyline view. Return by noon.
  3. 11:30am — Grab breakfast tacos from one of the food trucks on Barton Springs Road (don't skip this).
  4. 12:30pm — Head to Barton Springs Pool for an afternoon swim.
  5. 3pm — Stroll through the Botanical Garden and Umlauf Sculpture Garden.
  6. 5pm — Join the Hike-and-Bike Trail for sunset over Lady Bird Lake.
  7. Bonus — Check if there's a Full Moon Float scheduled for the evening.

Zilker Park isn't a destination you check off — it's a rhythm you fall into. Austinites come back every weekend because it's different every time. The creek level changes with the rains, the light shifts with the seasons, and somehow the combination of spring water, cypress trees, limestone, and that downtown skyline never gets old.
